Assignments/preparation
Today we will be looking at finishing off past assignments. Mr. Cole will come and help you with sections that you need to complete. If you don't have any passes or distinctions and merits to work on, complete these questions. They will help you prepare for a prac we will do on Thursday:
1. What evidence can fingerprints give in crimes?
2. What equipment do you need to take a fingerprint properly?
3. Explain the steps involved in taking fingerprints:
4. What different types of fingerprints are there? Are they the same for all of a person's fingers?
5. What evidence can fingerprints give investigators?
Use these sites to help you find your information -

Physics P8 - Space, Bio P5 - Indicator species
Today we're going to be doing one of three things:
- Physics P8. We started this yesterday, but some people haven't handed it in yet. Complete on a powerpoint and Mr. Cole will save it to print.
- Bio P5. Some people haven't drawn the graphs to show how the the levels of pollution indicators. if not, this is your job for today.
- If you've finished with those two assignments, these questions will help you revise for the electricity section with Mr. Lawrence:
- What is resistance in a circuit?
- Copy Ohm's Law into your books, including the units.
- What are 2 things that affect the current in a circuit? (Use the image above)
- Draw the symbols for a battery, light bulb, ammeter and voltmeter
- What do series and parallel circuits mean?
- How do ammeters get connected to a circuit?
- Show what a voltmeter connected to a circuit should look like using circuit symbols (use the link above):
- What is the unit for resistance?
- How could you calculate the resistance in a circuit?
- Try this activity.
- Complete this challenge. What charges attract and repel each other?
- Watch this video. Why is static electricity dangerous?

Feedback, physics P8
Today we're going to do some different things, the first one is a survey about this subject so far. It's anonymous and I'd really value hearing your feedback and what you think about the course. You can tell us more if you like, and not answering questions is fine too!
Once you've done that, Mr. Cole will give you your work that has been marked so far. You should print off the assignment sheets so that it can be formally marked. Please make sure you write your name on each sheet to save time!
Physics P8
For physics P8, you need to show the order of the planets in our solar system, as well as their relatve sizes and info about each one. To do this, work from the 'physics Assignment 3 task 1' post further down this page. Instead of a psoter, we will work in a powerpoint.
- What have you enjoyed about science so far this year?
- How would you feel about catch up sessions after school if you were behind with coursework?
- What would you change or like to improve in class?
- Do you think there should be a consequence if people don't hand in assignments on time?
- How do you think we could improve attendance at school?
- Is there anything else you would like to add?
Once you've done that, Mr. Cole will give you your work that has been marked so far. You should print off the assignment sheets so that it can be formally marked. Please make sure you write your name on each sheet to save time!

Biology P4, P6
Today we're going to be working on Biology P4 and P6. Check the spreadcheet to see if you've done these yet. If not:
P4:
You need to produce 3 powerpoint slides, 1 for each of the following. Make sure you explain what it is, and HOW it effects the environment -
Once you've finished, print out and hand to Mr. Cole in a plastic pocket.
P6:
You need to produce three leaflets (use microsoft publisher for this) about different ways we can minimise the human impact on the planet, one about each of the following -
Again, once you're finished make sure it gets handed to Mr. Cole!!!!

Space article / Assignment catch up
Today you have two jobs:
Job 1: make sure your article is finished, printed out and in the red folder for marking.
Job 2: You also need to look back through what you've already completed and find assignments you haven't done yet. EVERYONE has lots of these to fix. EVERYONE. To do this, go to the 'Mr. Cole' folder in 'Science' on the shared area. Click on '10b2 BTEC'.
You will see a spreadsheet with the class and assignments listed on it. The boxes with ones are the assignments you've done, the blank ones are those which havent been completed yet.
If you have a blank box in P6 for Biology for example, you need to go back to the folder and find the Biology assignment that covers P6. Read and complete this, then hand it in with your name. We will update this spreadsheet each week so you know what you still have to do.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE ALL PASS BOXES COMPLETED, YOU WON'T PASS YEAR 10 BTEC!

Physics Assignment 3 Task 2
Today we're going to be writing an article about Space for New Scientist. This is part of the second space assignment. Complete the following questions in an article format, like the ones in the shared area.
P10:
M6, 7:
P10:
- You need to explain how telescopes are used to observe space. Explain where they can be found, and what they look at.
- You also need to mention some woprk that the Hubble telescope is doing.
M6, 7:
- You need to explain what Edwin Hubble discovered about the Universe.
- Outline two pieces of evidence (cosmic microwave background radiation and red shift) that support his theory.
- Explain in detail how red shift occurs, also metioning the Doppler effect.
- Describe the Big Bang theory.
- Explain how Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) provides evidence for the Big Bang theory. Include the radiation mapping of the COBE satellite in your article.
- Explain how Red Shift provides evidence for the Big Bang theory.
- Describe the Steady State theory of the origin of the Universe.
- Compare the Big Bang theory to the Steady State theory.

Space - Investigating the Universe
This half term we will be finishing the assignment tasks on space. There are two jobs for this morning:
- Firstly, make sure you have finished the poster assignment from before Easter. Check this on the spreadsheet on Mr. Cole's computer.
- Once you've got the poster done, complete the questions here which realte to the next assignment:
- What are optical telescopes? What are two disadvantages associated with them?
- Who was Isaac Newton? What did he invent to help develop astronomy?
- Who discovered that the Universe is expanding?
- Use this link to find a galaxy. What is it called? What telescope did you use to see it?
- While looking at your galaxy from question 4, change the type of telescope you use. What happens to the image?
- Watch the video to explain what red shift is. How is it evidence for the big bang?
- Who proposed the steady state theory? Is it accepted today or not?
- What is the hubble telescope? Where is it and what is it used for?
- Draw a diagram to explain how the hubble telescope uses mirrors to create images.
- Extension - For the next assignment you will have to write a magazine article. Take a new Scientist from the front desk and find an article you like. What is good about it? What makes you want to read it? Is there anything you would change?
